Mathematics Symposium Follow-Up
August 3, 2009

This symposia follow-up will further refine action plans that were begun at the symposium in November of 2008.  The symposium is being held at the Austin Airport Marriot South hotel prior to the 2009 Texas Educator Exchange (TEX) Conference sponsored by the Texas Education Agency. The major focus of this follow-up event will be identification and development of promising strategies for use by teacher education faculty to ensure that new teachers understand and are able to implement the college and career readiness standards as they teach.

Community College Symposium
September 24, 2009

This symposium will bring Texas community college faculty together to plan ways to implement the Texas college and career readiness standards.  Keynote speakers from the Texas Education Agency, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and the College and Career Readiness Vertical Team in Mathematics will inform participants about the development of the College and Career Readiness standards and the implementation milestones. The major activity of the day will be to develop campus specific drafts of action plans designed to implement the standards in the transfer courses taught on community college campuses.

Noon-6pm

Dr. Cherie McCollough, Science Educator, will present:

Understanding by Design: Infusing College and Career Readiness Standards in Science Classrooms.

This professional development session will incorporate elements from Understanding by Design (Wiggins and McTighe, 2005), How People Learn (National Research Council, 1999) and the Science College and Career Readiness Standards. Participants are to bring a science classroom lesson that they know they will be using during the Fall, 2010 semester - one that has a hands-on component (laboratory, for example), is aligned with the TEKS and needs more work, i.e., is not at a satisfactory instructional level. We will be taking that lesson and redesigning it to incorporate the above. In addition, we will be devising a classroom action research plan where participants will assess the effectiveness of the lesson and report the resuts to the PD leader. Please note participants will receive a $500.00 stipend to be disbursed upon receipt of assessment results/evaluation.

We will provide a light lunch beginning at 11:30am, continuing until 1pm. The workshop will begin at noon and be followed by a dinner at 5pm. Hotel accommodations for either July 8-9 or July 9-10 will be provided at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corps Christi. Travel by air or car will be reimbursed.

The registration website will be announced shortly. Contact Sylvia Atkinson, 361.825.2142, sylvia.atkinson@tamucc.edu for questions about registration, accommodations or travel. Contact Cherie McCollough, 361.825.3166, Cherie.mccollough@tamucc.edu for any questions about the workshop.

This workshop is sponsored by the Texas College and Career Readiness Initiative: Science Faculty Collaborative, at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and initiative funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Community College Symposium for Social Studies and English/Language Arts Faculty
November 06, 2009
Sheraton Arlington Hotel - Arlington,TX

Over 100 faculty representatives from more than 52 Texas community colleges and universities participated in a Community College Symposium to learn more about and discuss the College and Career Standards for Social Studies and English/Language Arts.  The symposium was hosted jointly by the College and Career Readiness Initiative (CCRI) Faculty Collaboratives: Social Studies Faculty Collaborative, UT Arlington and English/Language Arts Faculty Collaborative, UT Austin.

The purpose of the College and Career Readiness Initiative is to develop and implement college readiness standards and activities to improve alignment between secondary and post secondary education, resulting in an increased number of students prepared for college and career success.

Participants had the opportunity to hear from speakers and dialog with colleagues about plans for the implementation of these standards at respective campuses.

Judith Loredo, of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and Joseph Kulhanek, or the Texas Education Agency, presented background information and provided an overview of the CCRS alignment work. Their presentation is available for download here, and in the resources archive:

Leila Christenbury, Professor of English Education at Virginia Commonwealth University, was a featured speaker. Dr. Christenbury addressed reading and writing in the content areas, a topic of interest to both English and Social Studies Faculty.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact Jeanie Spears at jspears@uta.edu or Kira Cox at kcox@uta.edu.
