Mini-Grant Winners 

Four mini-grants were funded by the College and Career Readiness Initiative: Social Studies Faculty Collaborative to support teacher education faculty in preparing prospective teachers to implement the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards.

  • Dario Jose Almarza, Ph.D., Lamar University, and Dagoberto Eli Ramirez, M.Ed. from La Joya Independent School District received a mini-grant entitled “Higher Education and Public Schools (HEAPS) Project—SS CCRS HEAPS Project.” The purpose of the grant is to develop training materials and modules and then the deployment a series of staff development workshops to address the CCRS.
 
  • Dr. Audrey Dentith from the University of Texas San Antonio received a grant  entitled “The UTSA Interdisciplinary Studies in Teacher Education Curriculum Revision.” This project will address development and revision of courses in the Interdisciplinary Studies program for teacher education students seeking certification. These courses require integration of full spectrum of skills and knowledge in the social studies including: history, geography, anthropology, sociology and philosophy into interdisciplinary course content for pre-service teachers.
 
  • Dr. Susan McCormack and Dr. Daniel Haworth from the University of Houston Clear Lake received a grant entitled “Collaborative Corridors for College Readiness.” The purpose is to offer an opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with practicing social studies educators to discuss the realities of curriculum development and implementation.  In-service teachers would deepen their understanding of curriculum development through interaction with pre-service teachers and university faculty.
 
  • Emily J. Summers and Gail D. Dickinson from Texas State University- San Marcos received a grant entitled “Addressing the Need for teacher Competence and Student Achievement Studies in Project-Based Instruction to Support College and Career Readiness Standards”. The purpose is to redesign a university elementary graduate /initial certification social studies course to include the integration of the CCRS through PBI curriculum units.  The teaching and research data in this proposal will allow for in-depth synthesis research relating to the actual practice of teaching social studies to adolescents and adults.

 Developing Performance Based Assignments for Social Studies Classrooms that Integrate the CCRS

This workshop presented an overview of the Career and College Readiness Standards (CCRS) for the State of Texas and highlight ways that pre-service teachers could develop performance based assignments for their social studies classrooms that integrate the CCRS.  This workshop focused on the content areas of American Government, U.S. History, and Geography.  After some overview presentations, participants engaged in guided activities in the creation of college readiness assignments in these subject areas.

Using Primary Sources to Inspire Today's Media-Saturated Students

Relevant Perspectives in Geographic & Scientific Literacy

 The College & Career Readiness Initiative: Science and Social Studies Collaboratives are pleased to sponsor an upcoming symposium to address ways to create authentic learning and experiences for educators in Science and Social Studies.  This symposium will focus on geopolitical and environmental issues.

WHERE:   Grapevine, TX – Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center

Speakers:

Harm de Blij, Ph.D. is an author,   professor, and television personality who for seven years was the  Geography Editor on ABC's "Good Morning America". He also joined NBC News as Geography Analyst, appearing mostly on MSNBC. He was the writer and commentator for the original PBS Series "The Power of Place."  He specializes in geopolitical and environmental issues.

Jean Johnson is Executive Vice President of Public Agenda, and a co-author of “Who Turned Out the Lights: Your Guided Tour to the Energy Crisis”. She has more than 20 years experience in public opinion and public policy. Her work has focused on issues ranging from education and energy to the federal budget and foreign policy. 

Presenters:

Jeff Lash is the Geography Program Chair and an Associate Professor of Geography at the University of Houston-Clear Lake. He earned a B.A. in Art History from the University of Texas at Austin, a Masters Degree in geography education as well as a Doctor of Philosophy from Texas State University. He teaches and continues to conduct research locally and internationally on human development through education.

Audrey Mohan is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Interdisciplinary Learning and Teaching at University of Texas-San Antonio. She has a Ph.D. in Geography Education from Texas State University. Her primary research focus includes teacher efficacy in geography and perceptions of social studies toward geography global issues. Audrey is currently working on developing a national, video-based, geography teacher professional development, Geography: Teaching with the Stars.

Andrew Milson
is Professor of Social Studies Education and Geography at the University of Texas at Arlington.  He earned his Ph.D. in 1999 from the University of Georgia where he studied social science education and geography. His research interests include geography education and the use of geospatial technologies in educational environments. 


Each university is invited to send a maximum of 3 participants from any of the following disciplines: Science, Social Studies, or Teacher Education.
