This professional development session will incorporate elements from Understanding by Design (Wiggins and McTighe, 2005), How People Learn (National Research Council, 1999) and the Science College and Career Readiness Standards. Participants are to bring a science classroom lesson that they know they will be using during the Fall, 2010 semester - one that has a hands-on component (laboratory, for example), is aligned with the TEKS and needs more work, i.e., is not at a satisfactory instructional level. We will be taking that lesson and redesigning it to incorporate the above. In addition, we will be devising a classroom action research plan where participants will assess the effectiveness of the lesson and report the resuts to the PD leader. Please note participants will receive a $500.00 stipend to be disbursed upon receipt of assessment results/evaluation.
We will provide a light lunch beginning at 11:30am, continuing until 1pm. The workshop will begin at noon and be followed by a dinner at 5pm. Hotel accommodations for either July 8-9 or July 9-10 will be provided at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corps Christi. Travel by air or car will be reimbursed.
